Our work speaks for itself

Take a look at a selection of our recent projects, crafted with care and designed to make an impact. Each one tells a story of creativity, collaboration, and results.

We were assigned a project to create our spirit animal.

I am not a spiritual person, and thought long and hard on what would best suit me.

I decided that there wasn’t a better option than a funny picture of Donkey Kong that I’ve enjoyed for a long time.

Early development started with material tests. I started with fabrics and foam for the main body. But I found I liked polymer clay worked best for recreating the softer lines and bold colours of this Ape

I also played with the idea of incorporating animatronic elements into this piece.

I worked with a software developer friend in touch designer to play around with motorised eyes

I decided the body would be a 3d printed construction, wrapped in a layer of clay for texture

A scale model was made to test this technique

Then I ran into a large problem.

This model that I wanted to made was gonna be big. Really big. Way too big for a 3d printer.

I didn’t know what I was supposed to do about this for a few weeks.

But all that it accomplished was trashing my room.

I was left unsure with what to do about this. I tried a few different ways to work around it, including scrapping the idea of printing it and trying to cut the head out of foam.

Eventually I had settled on the idea to split the model into smaller chunks, and glue them all together

This was a very time and printer heavy solution to the problem, so I worked in the evenings and commandeered the schools 3d print farm.

I also had to improve at preparing and operating the printers themselves to make this project happen on time.

I learned how to position my prints better, and choose more intelligent support angles

I learned how to manually tinker with the support settings to make more stable and successful prints

The shapes were cut in odd angles, so it was hard to know whether the pieces were actually successful until they were all lined up together.

As the pieces came together, I decided that I preferred the uncovered look of the raw plastics

At time of writing, this piece is unfinished. The muzzle requires a larger printer, which is owned by the school. Unfortunately it is out of service, but will be finished when the machine is operational again.
